The selected portions of the Quran can be both listened to and read, offering an opportunity for study and reflection. The initial chapter, called “The Opening” (Al Fatihah), comprises eight verses and is often regarded as the "Lord’s Prayer" of Islam. This chapter is recited repeatedly during daily prayers, encapsulating the fundamental relationship between humans and God in worship. It begins with praise for God and a plea for His guidance in all aspects of life.

The Quran then proceeds with its longest chapter, “The Cow” (Al Baqarah). The title references a story within this chapter (starting at verse 67) about the followers of Moses. The early part of this segment discusses the condition of humanity in relation to God, outlining how divine guidance is sent through messengers, leaving individuals with a choice: to believe, reject faith, or act hypocritically by outwardly showing belief while harboring doubt or ill intent internally.

Juz' 1 also recounts the story of human creation, serving as a reminder of God's numerous blessings. It further narrates stories of previous peoples and their responses to divine guidance, highlighting the struggles undertaken by prophets such as Abraham, Moses, and Jesus to bring enlightenment to their communities.

A juzʼ (Arabic: جُزْءْ, plural: أَجْزَاءْ ajzāʼ) refers to one of thirty parts into which the Quran is divided, each varying in length. It is also known as the para (پارہ/পারা) in Iran and the Indian subcontinent. It is important to note that these divisions do not influence the meaning of the text itself; anyone can begin reading from any point within the Quran. Historically, during medieval times when access to complete manuscripts was limited due to cost, copies were stored in mosques divided into these thirty sections to facilitate easier distribution and recitation, especially during Ramadan when the entire Quran is traditionally recited over thirty nights.

Each juzʼ is subdivided into ḥizbāni (“two groups”), with a total of sixty aḥzāb across the Quran. Each ḥizb is further split into four quarters, termed maqraʼs or “readings,” resulting in a total of 240 maqraʼs. These subdivisions are practical tools frequently used by those memorizing the Quran for revision and study.

The most widely memorized juzʼ is juzʼ ‘amma,’ the thirtieth portion, encompassing chapters 78 through 114. This section includes many of the shortest chapters and is named after its first word in chapter 78. Juzʼ ‘amma’ holds particular significance for its accessibility and ease of memorization for many students of the Quran.
